Thanksgiving Travel Getaways

47 million Americans joined the great Thanksgiving getaway in 2017, journeying more than 50 miles away from home. Airlines carried more than 27 million passengers during the 4-day period last year and similar numbers are expected once again this year.

Here at JaxBlackCar.com, we are passionate about Jacksonville, but also about travel. We thought it’d be fun to look at some of the more “different” Thanksgiving destinations, perfect if you’re looking to get away from it all!

1 THE NATIONAL PARKS

During the summer the National Parks System gets pretty hectic, so Thanksgiving can be the perfect time to check out some of the country’s most scenic locations, and the hotels have some superb Thanksgiving deals.

2 A DISNEY CRUISE

Probably the happiest place on earth, who wouldn’t want to float away with the family and Disney’s most famous residents? With live football broadcasts, shows, aqua play areas, and special Thanksgiving celebrations, this is a dream family getaway.

3 HAWAII

It’s the off-peak season in Hawaii so why not take advantage of spacious beaches, better deals and luxurious hotels, escaping the crush of the city and enjoying some sunshine! Bustling nightlife, surfing, and adventures await.

4 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

The Windy City has lots to offer at any time of the year, but the Thanksgiving parade makes this one of our favorites! Giant balloons, marching bands, dance groups, and celebrity appearances, as well as the Christmas market, make this a great way to kick-start the holiday season.

5 PLYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS

The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians first held a feast at the Plymouth Colony in 1621, starting a wealth of Thanksgiving celebrations still recognized in Massachusetts today. Party like a pilgrim attending a host of events including a food festival, crafter’s village and drum corps concert.

6 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

The Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia is the oldest of its kind in the U.S., bringing the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to life with festive floats, giant balloons, and local performers. The Macy’s Christmas light show and RiverRink are also must-sees in Philly!

7 LAS VEGAS

Remarkably, it’s the city’s low season meaning you’ll take advantage of the best airfare, hotel prices and best of all – you’ll experience fewer crowds. Sin City offers a different Thanksgiving experience, from zip lining, hot air balloon rides, theme parks and of course, casinos! Head out of town to experience kayaking in the Colorado River.

8 GO SKIING OR SNOWBOARDING

The Keystone Resort in Colorado opens in early November, and offers such as “kids ski for free” are often available at this early part of the season. Although this article is all about the U.S., you could head north of the border into Canada if you want to get out of the country! Whistler, BC, is just one of the popular snow-filled resorts to choose from there.

9 GRAPEVINE, TEXAS

The “Christmas Capital of Texas” knows how to celebrate Thanksgiving. More than 1400 Christmas events kick off during the Thanksgiving weekend, and the city sparkles with millions of lights, lavish decorations, and a famous light show!

10 SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA

For the thrill seeker, Scottsdale has lots to offer. Outdoor adventure opportunities are plentiful, from bike tours through the Sonoran Desert to kayak riding on the Salt River. Beautiful golf courses and stunning wildlife add to the appeal of this holiday getaway with a difference.

11 NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

Deep-fried turkey joins an already varied dining scene, and the Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade is something of a culinary explosion! The city is, after all, where po’boys, crawfish and vignettes, and the turducken were first made. A lively social scene makes this a great location for groups of guys or girls.
